A Message from Helena, My Mom Always Drove me to Dance Class

Dedicated to every woman, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister or friend who has guided and provided. Especially to my mother Lori. IMG_1297Mother's Day is just a few days away and its got me reflecting on how much my mom has impacted my life. My mom has truly and honestly been a life line, saving grace and an example of pure unconditional love. I am almost overwhelmed by what a strong woman she is, but I can see how this strength has translated into both my sister and myself. Growing up wasn't the easiest for us as a family, but somehow my mom always made delicious home cooked meals appear on the table and in our lunches. My mom taught me at a young age the importance of good, healthy and nourishing food, that also came from the heart.

We all worked hard and together as a family, my sister and I were able to stay in competitive dancing for 12 years. Those 12 years must have been crazy for my mom, getting us off to school, lunches packed, arranging pick ups and drop offs right to dance classes for the evening. Getting us back home late at night and still completing homework. My mom did this day in and day out for us!

The girls on my dance team were my best friends and my instructors taught me what it meant to be apart of a loving and nurturing environment. Our studio was a place to learn, to play and grow. Being apart of my dance community made us incredibly happy as kids and my mom saw this. Are you starting to see some parallels?

My dedication and passion for dance landed me my first job as an instructor. By the age of twelve I was teaching other kids about movement and technique. Perhaps I was always meant to teach yoga, but had it not been for my mom, maybe my life wouldn't have moved in this direction. My mom gave me the opportunity to have a passion and now I put my heart and soul into In Fine Feather.

IMG_1298As an adult, I have a new appreciation for moms and I have been really inspired by my sister who is a new mom. I feel like I have a better understanding for what moms have to do everyday for their little ones, then their teenagers and then adult children. It is this amazing journey where you are apart of shaping someone's life and being a huge part of their existence.

Mom, I would not be where I am today without you and Kelly. You have both taught me the most valuable life lessons and we continually keep learning from each other. My niece Heidi is one years old, I have no idea what she will be, but if I can help her explore her passion, her talents and her aspirations I will. My mom taught me this.

Thanks mom for countless late night phone calls, the best home made soups I've ever had, MOM HUGS, movies nights, answering basic cooking questions, giving me advice, but also space to figure my stuff out, and when I fall, always picking me up. I love you and thanks for helping me become the woman I am today. I am so grateful for how you raised me and where its got me. Even though we might not have been practicing 'yoga'; we were always practicing yoga.

Thank you would never be enough. I carry your heart with me, I carry it in my heart.

Love and Gratitude to powerful woman who guide and provide, Helena

10923508_827950290584553_7481746919153044872_nHello You! The clocks just went forward an hour. You can think of it as loosing an hour… or you can think of it as gaining an hour of sunlight every day. And sunlight does a body good. Sunlight is one of the many things I love about the In Fine Feather practice room. The huge front windows let in so much natural light that you can’t help but feel good in this space. And with the warmer weather approaching, it’ll soon allow in natural heat too. If you don’t generally sit towards the front of the room, I encourage you to try it this week – especially during daytime classes. You’ll love the warmth and energy that you receive from the sun.

This Sunday, March 20th marks the first day of Spring or the Spring Equinox. It’s traditional in yoga to practice 108 Sun Salutations during an Equinox to acknowledge the changing world around us. If 108 Sun Salutations seems a little much for you, perhaps you could make it to your mat this Sunday and acknowledge the changes that yoga has presented in your body & mind. Or perhaps you can take a few minutes to sit in quiet meditation reflecting on this past winter and allowing yourself to open up to new opportunities that may arise this Spring? Either way, I encourage you to reflect somehow.

I’ve included a link below for a Spring Equinox Meditation. It is beautiful, restorative music set to archetypal images that are meant to immerse you into the spirit of Spring. Please visit the link on your computer in a silent room, make the video “full screen” then sit back comfortably, with a tall spine and enjoy the peaceful sounds and images.

Our 30 Day Challenge is still happening and I love the buzz in the studio. You’ve probably noticed how busy classes have been and I hope you’re loving all the extra energy. A reminder that our studio fits 5 rows of mats quite nicely and that it’s okay to be close to your neighbour. One of the benefits of being close to your fellow yogi is that you can remind each other to breathe with a sounded breath… or you can just roll your eyes to each other or laugh to each other when the teacher asks you to do something that might seem crazy.

If you’re feeling inspired by this 30 Day Challenge and you have an unlimited monthly membership, you might want to challenge yourself to complete 10 classes by the end of the month. Or even make it to the studio every day. I promise you won’t regret it. Honestly, has there every been a time where you left yoga and thought to yourself, “Geez, I wish I just stayed home.” I highly doubt it.

Peace, love & light, See you on your mats,

Shelley xo

A Message from Helena.

12219482_10153691529782768_4795751509476178996_nBack to my Mat. It continues to amaze me how the practice of yoga is always creating subtle shifts in my body and more so, awareness in my mind. I have hundreds, to thousands of hours on my mat as a student and as a teacher and I am still in love with the magic of yoga. I instruct daily and watch bodies move; this is in fact most of my day and most of my week. This attention to teaching has allowed me to notice that I face all the same challenges my students do; my body feels fatigued, I find certain postures so difficult and sometimes making it to your mat is the hardest part. But, I am also recognizing, personally, how essential it is to make that time and I am excited to get back to my mat as a student, I've got to. I can feel that it's time for growth, commitment and change. I've been trying to make some shifts lately to practice more, listen to my body more and change where I am investing my energy. So I have joined our 30 day challenge! I really have no idea how many classes I will be able to complete, but I am prepared to make my best effort. I did my first 30 Day Yoga Challenge at De La Sol and I can remember it being the most energized and inspired I have ever felt in my life. The practice is powerful and I love how it always shows you what you need if you just listen. My body and my mind have been telling me I need this for awhile, so here I go! It feels insanely remarkable that I have found and dedicated my life to something that continues to challenge me, but also fills me with so much passion, patience, forgiveness, understanding and persistence. I think this is what they call love and I am honoured everyday that each of you let me share this wild ride with you. To everyone else completing a 30 day challenge, good luck, lets do this!

With Love & Gratitude, Helena xo

Shelley2The In Fine Feather Community, I love this place. I love teaching here. I love practicing here. I love all the people here. I love the light in here. I just love the In Fine Feather Community and am so thankful to Helena for creating such an inviting space for all of us to enjoy.

One of the biggest reasons I love teaching here so much is because of all of you. I feel like I know you and that you know me and there is something so comforting, so welcoming about that. I make an effort to know your names, your goals, your injuries and even a bit about your life outside of yoga. I feel it makes me a better teacher to know you so well.

And it’s so wonderful when you take the time to ask me about my practice or my life, that you know my son’s name and that I get stressed out when I have too many things on my plate. I always appreciate when you share your opinions about what you loved or didn’t love about class or about the play list. This also makes me a better teacher and more vested in making sure you love what we’re doing here.

Want to know another great thing about In Fine Feather? You don’t have to be here everyday to feel like your part of this community. Whether you come once a day, once a week or once a month, we love and value your involvement just the same. We know that sometimes it can be difficult to make it to your mat or into the studio – we’ve all been there. Life gets busy. Things get in the way. But this spring, we’d like to challenge you to make yoga a part of your everyday for just 30 days.

If you haven’t heard about it yet, we are hosting another 30 Day Challenge starting March 1st. That’s 30 yoga classes in 30 days. I know, I know… it seems like a lot. But trust me when I say that you won’t regret making the effort. Making the effort to take care of yourself. Making the effort to improve your practice. Making the effort to slow down.

This challenge will make you feel even more connected with our awesome community of yogis. You’ll start to see the same faces every day and connect in new ways. Whether it’s just a nod or a full blown conversation on how much you love or hate crow pose. You’ll notice a shift in your body and mind. You’ll notice how much you crave yoga and being in this space.

Let me make a confession here. I’ve never completed 30 classes in 30 days. I’ve tried twice and I won’t say that I failed, because I gained so much from the time I did spend on my mat. So perhaps your goal when signing up for the 30 day challenge is to complete 24 classes in 30 days. Because that’s super awesome too! And we have lots of ways to help you complete this challenge, to whatever extent you wish.

Here are 7 solid reasons to accept this challenge.

1.We’ve added a special class for challengers only every Saturday at 9am. These classes will only be 30 – 45 minutes and restorative or meditative in nature. Then you can stick around for my Intro to Yoga class at 10am and boom! That’s 2 classes in one day or 8 classes during the 30 days.

2.We give you one day of home practice because we know it might be difficult to make it into the studio. Just make sure you do at least 30 minutes as home, then post a pic of yourself online and tag us or email it to us so we can see it.

3. We have 3 workshops in March that will all count as a valid class. There is an additional cost for these workshops, but you get 15% off as a challenger!

- Yoga Nidra on Friday March 4th at 8pm - Restorative Yoga on Friday March 11th at 8pm - Mala Making Workshop on Saturday March 6th at 2pm

4. Helena and I send out weekly emails to keep you motivated including special tips on completing your challenge, recipes and more.

5. We brought in new teachers. Tim Smith is teaching Monday nights at 8pm and we will be introducing new teachers in the spring.

6. Prizes! There are a lot of prizes to be won for those who complete 30 classes in 30 days. There is a prize draw for anyone who participates. Plus everyone who signs up gets a goodie bag with free class passes to share with friends, Love My Mat stuff, discount offers and other treats to help you make it through.

7. There’s a party at the end for everyone who signed up. We have a fun little pot luck where we can chat about what we loved & learnt during our 30 days together. We draw for prizes and we might even dance a little.

So, think about it. I know you can do it and so do you. You’ve got a couple weeks to ask us questions and then sign up for something that has the potential to change your life for the better. You won’t regret it, I promise!

See you on your mats! Much love & gratitude,

Shelley

A Message From Helena

Tis the Season

Santa-YogaThe Christmas season is upon us, carols are on the radio, decorative, vibrant lights are going up and my secret santa has been drawn. These are some of the smaller things I enjoy about the season, but I am sure we have all at some point taken the holidays for granted and found them stressful, busy and financially draining. One year I decided to change how I spent my time, attention and consumer patterns. Leading up to the big day, instead of finding myself stuck in traffic and line ups I decided to give more home made gifts. I may not be the craftiest person, but it was way more fun getting my hands right into the making! I also starting purchasing smaller presents that supported a local business or found gifts that had a lot of genuine thought put into them. I noticed my family and friends really appreciated these gestures and I felt more excited even to give them. Each present was from my heart, contained a conscious effort and mindful reflection.

Someone recently asked me the loving and thoughtful question,  what would you like for Christmas? It got me to thinking for awhile, what do I want and not just want, what do I actually want!!!??? All I could think of was the gift of time. If I really reflect on my life, it is rather remarkable and I am grateful for so much. Why would I want anything when memories, laughter and love are irreplaceable. All I want is the gift of time, to enjoy more moments with those that I love and care about. I invite you all over the next few weeks to take some time, perhaps in practice or when you wake up to acknowledge the moments you are grateful for and the people that enrich your life. Celebrate them this Christmas season. We don’t need more, everything we want and need, we have and are. Everyday love, kindness and compassion are right in front of us. Sometimes a holiday can remind us of this, but it can also become a daily practice of gratitude and appreciation.

While we can all get caught up in the hustle and bustle; the food, the parties and the total disregard for our daily patterns and routines, remember to take time for yourself. Consciously create this time to avoid feeling run down, listen to the body, sleep and detox in yoga as much as you need to. I always say yoga is the best gift you can give yourself and it is a way of giving back to the body and maintaining balance. Don’t let the holidays take a toll on you; let them fill you will more memories, light and love. Each of you enrich my life and I am blessed to share the In Fine Feather Yoga community with you. I look forward to sharing another holiday season together, the tree is going up this week!

With Love Always, Helena

photo-1Moments of Bliss & Being in the Present Moment It such a beautiful time of year, there is still a warm kiss from the sun in the sky, the tree tops are vibrantly changing color and there is a crisp cool breeze in the air. The other day this weather was calling me, every ounce and intuition in me had to go to one of my favorite places around, Christie Lake. Lately, life seems to be moving quickly and weeks have been passing by in what seems like a moment. We can all relate to the constant rush which we have come to consider as normal, but is usually a huge factor contributing to stress and feeling disconnected.

As soon as I pulled into the conservation area, a place I have many fond memories in, a place I would consider peaceful and joyful, all tensions and stress left my body. I was at home and feeling perfectly content, happy and oblivious to anything else. I was perfectly in that moment. Everything slowed down, I was able to embrace the sun shinning on the water, my feet in the sand perhaps for the last time of the season and the ridiculousness of feeding a hundred seagulls crackers. I left feeling beyond restored, I was in bliss. I did not want to leave, but knew it was time to go, but that I could also take those memories and moments with me. I was happy I took the time to experience them.

I often experience the same sensations throughout my yoga practice; clear, unaffected, conscious, present, beyond content and fulfilled. Sometimes I could stay in savasana forever! I am always happy I took the time to practice. Perhaps these moments are the key to living a more enriched life. An existence of gratitude and joy, rather then letting everything pass by without noticing. This is my invitation to you; while everything else called 'life' is happening around you, find what brings you moments of bliss and peace. Whether it is on your yoga mat, soaking up the last few weeks of autumn, laughing with friends or singing your favorite songs out loud in the car...DO IT! Why not...when that intuition calls you, GO!

It also brings me much gratitude that I am able to offer a space, a sanctuary, a retreat and playground for so many of you. Hey, myself included, I love our pre/post yoga class chats in the lounge! The studio is always available and accessible to each of you, so if you can't make it to the beach, lets make some energetic waves in the practice room. I look forward to seeing you soon!

With Love and Gratitude Always. Lets enjoy this beautiful season together!

Love Helena!

A Message from Shelley Gordon

Yoga Instructor Shelley GordonIt’s officially autumn. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. The air is cooling and the leaves are beginning to change. Our care-free summer days have ended and it’s now time to return to a routine. If you’ve missed your regular yoga practice during the summer – now is the perfect time to re-commit. Reconnect with your mat. Reconnect with your body. Reconnect with your mind. As you begin a regular yoga practice, you’ll be surprised at how much freedom you’ll feel. When we make time to connect with ourselves, we often end up feeling as if we have more time to spare.

So as a new season begins, I urge you to take to your mat. If you’re one of the few who’s been able to maintain a regular practice this summer – way to go! Perhaps you can adjust your focus during this seasonal shift to feel a sense of renewed appreciation for your mat and your practice.

Here are some helpful tips to get you back to your mat or change it up!

1. Make a set time for your home yoga practice each day for the same length of time. You can set your alarm an extra 30 minutes early or skip a TV show in the evening for yoga. 2. Close your eye during practice. Reconnect with how your body feels internally instead of focusing externally. 3. When it’s time for savasana, try supported Legs-Up-The-Wall instead with a bolster under you sacrum. 4. If you usually practice Sun Salutation A’s for your home practice – try B’s with added chair & warrior 1. 5. Bring a buddy! Make plans to attend the same yoga class once or twice a week with a friend. It’s so much easier to stay committed when you have a buddy to encourage you and to share your progress with. 6. Make a healthy lifestyle change and stick to it for 40 days. It could be as simple as smiling at yourself in the mirror every morning or drinking more water or always taking the stairs. But whatever it is, stick to it for 40 days and it will become a new, healthy habit.

So what ever you’re doing this fall, but sure to be healthy, include friends and smile!

With love and Gratitude,

Shelley

A Message from Helena, Yoga and Nature.

IMG_6475The last few days I have been reflecting on my summer, specifically an incredible season of outdoor yoga. I had the opportunity to teach in some really cool urban settings and parks; including Gage Park, Christie Lake for the Harvest Picnic, McMaster Campus, James Street pop up park, on Ottawa Street during the Pan Am games, Tews Fall and at YogaFest. Each experience brings to light the beautiful connection between yoga and nature. It becomes difficult to describe the sensation you feel after an outdoor yoga class and it is different then a studio practice when you can feel the sun on your skin, the wind blowing, grass under your feet, birds chirping, looking up into the clouds and tree tops. LIFE happening all around. The focus of the practice, the consciousness to breathe, the mindfulness of movement; it creates this powerful connection to self and the natural forces of nature. I was always left with a sense of bliss, reassured by the stability of the ground beneath me and freedom from the vastness of the sky and in harmony with both sensations.

While the environment might not be as controlled as it is in a studio, the outdoor practice presents other interesting benefits; practicing on uneven ground, increasing balance. A wicked playlist of natures music, a symphony of wind, trees, water and birds. Inversions take on a whole other dimension and perspective of the world we are so used to looking at one way. When you begin to move with nature, you are able to recognize your place within the universe and that you are very much apart of it. I feel so grateful for these moments; balanced, centered, clear and connected.

When I hear that yoga in the park has been one of the best parts of some of your summers, I could burst with happiness! The park has truly been a gift for all of us and its an honor to host these classes. The In Fine Feather community has become my family and family is all about giving love. I LOVE sharing my passion for yoga and nature. And if even one person has felt inspired by our classes outside, I feel so grateful. As our second year anniversary approaches, I can't wait to share more yoga love with you all. Great things are still to come and yoga in the park next year is a promise!

Full of light and love, Helena

A Message from Helena. Ego and Integrity.

photo-13I am continuously exploring the driving force behind why I practice and teach yoga. What has this great journey done for my over all well being? I know that it has provided me with so much physical strength and an abundance of personal growth and this always encourages me to progress further! The more I continue to practice yoga and observe students practice, I can see a great connection between moving from your ego (inner self behaviour) or moving from integrity (a deep space of truth). I believe the ego limits us from acknowledging our greater consciousness and even masks honesty with an egocentric sense of self perception. After years of studying I can observe the ego being broken down and integrity being strengthened. It started from asking the question; why am I moving like this? Am I moving with mindfulness or just to get into the deepest variation of the pose? Is the depth of my posture forced and excessive or coming from a grounded place of stability? Can I maintain this? Is it reasonable and within my range of motion? Is it based on habit and impulse or what is actually right for me? As soon as I start to defy or ignore these questions, the judgemental ego takes over and I've lost the purpose of my practice; true connectedness. The yoga practice keep us in check with ourselves, our ego and our behavioural responses/reactions. The asanas allow us to embrace our strengths but recognize our weaknesses physically and mentally. When we compromise our breathe, move too deep into a posture or ignore our bodily intuition, this is driven and controlled by the ego. The ego is a difficult thing to recognize but eventually we have to listen to our inner consciousness that is asking us to examine not only why we choose to do our postures the way we do, but also why we do anything the way we do.

In yoga sometimes we need to modify our poses or use props, we even fall down or get an injury that holds us back, its a struggle and sometimes we feel weak. We are not always 100% and this is life too. We fall, we makes mistakes, take the wrong path, do things against our better judgement and push ourselves too hard. Recognize these moments as a gift to discover a greater truth about yourself. To find the ability to let go of ego, to examine your inner talk, to surrender to what is, to live without judgement, get over ourselves and change our patterns of behaviour. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you can't touch your toes or get into king pigeon pose. Doing the deepest variation of a posture does NOT make you a better person or more enlightened. When we are so caught up in OURselves, MY pose, MY mat, My practice, MY life, MY 'greatness', we risk loosing sight of what really matters; authentic connection to self and each other. This acknowledges that our actions, movements and thoughts are greater then just our own, they ripple like waves and affect everyone around us. To be more conscious of ego means, to be more conscious of each other.

To help dismantle ego, continue to practice asana and let the postures do the work they are meant to do energetically and physically. Also practice SVADHYAYA, Honest Self Study; inner awareness and time for self reflection. Recognize your bad habits on and off the mat and explore what is the driving force behind doing it. Be guided by your breathe, move in the way of consciousness for all and live to be whole with the universe. Just BE!

With love and gratitude always, Helena

A Message from Shelley. Community & Connection.

Hello In Fine Featherers! Shelley2Shelley here, wanting to check in to see how the start to your summer is. Do you have any plans? Any goals for this summer? My goal is to practice more yoga. I know sometimes during the summer, you want to play outside, or have drinks on a patio or enjoy a backyard campfire with friends (my fav summer activity!) but don't forget to yoga. With the sun rising earlier, I prefer to practice in the morning or early afternoon. That way I can spend in the rest of the day hiking, relaxing with friends or sharing ice cream with my son.

Take advantage of our 10am classes on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday at the studio. These are all gentle-type classes and a great way to get your body moving freely for your day and your mind clear and focused on positive energy. There are also great classes every day at noon, for those of you who like to sleep in or have a more challenging class. If you work during the day, perhaps you can add a few Sun Salutations to your morning routine. That way you’ll get your spine moving freely and your joints lubricated to help you glide through your day until you can make it into the studio for a full class.

11709450_916539215058993_6080626576316668464_n-2And of course, don't forget Yoga In The Park every Sunday at 10am by the Rose Garden in Gage Park. We will be rotating teachers, so it'll always be interesting and fun. If you missed last Sunday - it was amazing. There were so many new and familiar faces. These outdoor yoga classes are a great way to connect with your community. And Community is really what life is all about.

Speaking of community… A couple weeks ago in class, I was asking you to evoke the feeling of a universal community. The idea of breathing in air, energy and prana that every living being has already inhaled and exhaled is so powerful.

When you inhale, you are opening yourself up to receive the outer world into your world. The process of breathing in connects you with the whole universe as you take in atoms that have been exhaled countless times by countless others. It connects you with every human being and every living being that has ever lived. Imagine the power of one breath as you receive atoms that have been part of Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Teresa and King Tut. Want to do the math? Look here.

What an amazing concept to realize that there is something that connects us all. Let all this into your being. Let the universe with all its vast variety fill your lungs and your whole body. As you breathe in, notice that you have opened your body to the universe. Make an effort to also open your mental and spiritual doors with each breath and realize that you are one with everything.

Bring this thought into the practice room at In Fine Feather. Feel a connection with your fellow yogis in the practice room. Know that you are sharing breath, atoms, prana. This week in your practice, make an effort to exhale joy, love & good intentions into our space. Share your positive energy and thoughts with your fellow students and be open to receiving their energy in return. This feeling of support and energy from such an amazing group of people is one of the reasons why I love practicing and teaching at In Fine Feather so much.

Want to take your connection to your community one step further? Perhaps you can volunteer this summer? There are a ton of events happening in Hamilton that always need helpful volunteers. I've included a couple links that list many places you can volunteer in Hamilton.
